Nyachiro

This is Nyachiro, the one month old daughter of Diana (AKA Kitaboka), one of the Ikizu translators with whom I work. I was trying to hold her up for the picture so you could see her a bit better, but I don't think it worked very well! Anyway, it's kind of cool because her father, Pius, was one of the linguists at our office back in the day when I was a linguist, too. So I've worked with both of her parents and am pretty confident that she'll turn out to be a smart litle girl!

If the name Nyachiro seems a bit difficult to you, Andrew agrees with you. He's calling her Cheerios, and I call her Cheery, since she is a pretty cheerful baby. Nyachiro means "born during the night" in Kwaya, her father's language. She was born at about 12:15am, so even though the name was chosen before she was born, it fits very well.
